Dialogue Session Between SPMA and MPMA

On 18th May 2002, representatives from the Malaysian Paper Merchants Association hosted a sumptuous dinner for their counterparts from the Singapore Paper Merchants Association. The dinner was a pre-highlight to a highly successful dialogue session that followed the following day.

On 19th May 2002, representatives from both sides held a dialogue session at Crystal Crown Hotel, Petaling Jaya. The main purpose of this dialogue session was to follow up on certain matters pertaining to the paper industry of the two countries. It was also aimed at establishing closer links between the two countries, and to promote healthy growth and enhance the competitiveness of the paper industry in the IT age.

There were various issues discussed during the dialogue session. The topics centered on increasing the profitability of the paper merchandising business and the effect of IT growth on the paper industry. Buying trends and fluctuation

of paper prices sparked certain interest among the participants. The unusual trend of uncoated paper prices being higher than coated paper prices was also looked into. The effect of the increase in GST in Singapore to 5% was also debated.

One vital point that was noted was the need to constantly communicate with each other. The main purpose is to keep exchanging ideas and market information. The participants agreed that mutual communication is very important to achieve the objectives and targets of both associations.

The session was a success as it highlighted and brought to the attention of both parties, the upcoming challenges and problems of the paper industry. It also broadened the network and communication channels of both parties, with benefits to be reaped in the future. With these on hand, both associations look forward to more cooperation in the near future.
